Just a concern ...
February 25, 2009

After last week’s slew of events; including 2 fires, a girl giving birth in the dorms, an assault on a professor, and more, last week was pleasant and much needed.

However, while Friday and Saturday tend to be the slowest days of the week in the newsroom (unless some idiot decides to attack a professor), I know that on Sunday I will have to spend a ton of time compiling all the police reports.

Just check out the police reports I submit for every Monday’s paper; it is a bit ridiculous. Sure these reports cover Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and therefore should be longer, but give me a break. Some weeks, I have more DUI reports on Monday than all of an average day's reports!

At first, I didn’t notice a bit, but now I find this is very concerning. THAT many DUI charges over the weekend, mostly by people ages 18-25? It is absurd and alarms me to say the least.

People – be smart. If you’re going to a bar and want to leave, have a couple of friends come and pick you and your car up. If you’re at a party and don’t plan on staying the whole evening, then designate a driver to remain sober. There are plenty of ways to avoid drinking and driving, surely you can think of one.

It may be an inconvenience, but just think of the selfless move being made by having a driver. If not for your own sake of not getting a citation, felony or being arrested, do it for the other people on the road and their families.

And no, you aren’t a “good drunk driver,” don’t even give me that. That defense is just plain stupid and irrational. And you don’t have a “cop-dar,” trust me, it doesn’t exist. There isn’t anything to be totally sure about while driving drunk, except that you are making a poor decision and are putting others and yourself in danger.

If not for the other people in the world, then do it for me – I think I may be developing carpel tunnel syndrome from typing all these names every Sunday.
