Ricketts ends season on high note with sixth career no-hitter
STILLWATER The No. 1 OU softball team capped off its dominant regular season by blanking Oklahoma State at Cowgirl Stadium this afternoon, 5-0, thanks to another no-hitter from senior Keilani Ricketts.
Key Stat: 19-1 — The combined score of the three Bedlam games heavily favored the Sooners. OSU was coming off a series win over No. 6 Texas, but Oklahoma gave its in-state rival little postseason hope after the lopsided series sweep.
Key Player: Keilani Ricketts — The hard-throwing lefty tossed her fifth no-hitter of the year and sixth of her OU career. No-hitters are becoming commonplace for Ricketts, but the difficulty of the achievement cannot be ignored. She allowed just one base runner via hit-by-pitch and struck out seven Cowgirl batters.
Honorable Mention: Lauren Chamberlain – Chamberlain belted home runs No. 24 and 25 today at Cowgirl Stadium. The sophomore is third in the NCAA in that category and is approaching the 30-homer mark she set last season. Chamberlain also had three runs, two walks and four RBIs in the game.
What it means: Having already clinched the Bedlam series victory and Big 12 title Saturday afternoon, Sunday’s game had very little meaning other than it being a rivalry game. With only four losses on the season, Oklahoma appears to be a lock to host both regionals and super regionals at Marita Hynes Field.
What’s next for the Sooners: The postseason regionals should be the next time the top-ranked Sooners will be in action. Oklahoma will host a regional at Marita Hynes Field next weekend. The exact date and time will not be known until the NCAA Softball selection show Sunday evening.
