OU baseball: Garza Jr. throws gem, Sooners win 11th straight game
The No. 14 Oklahoma baseball team extended its win streak to 11 games with a 3-1 victory against Oral Roberts on Tuesday at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa.
Key Stat: 8 — The Sooners (23-4, 3-0 Big 12) trailed, 1-0, after one inning, but the pitching staff, aka freshman pitcher Ralph Garza Jr., tossed eight shutout innings to end the game. That gave the offense enough time to score — OU scored once in the third and twice in the fourth — enough runs to win.
Key Player: Freshman pitcher Ralph Garza Jr. — The righty freshman allowed a run in the first inning, but that was it. He was lights out in his complete-game outing, allowing one run on three hits while striking out 11 batters, which doubled his career total to 22 strikeouts. At one point during this game, he retired 15-of-16 batters, with the only runner reaching base coming on a dropped third strike.
Hit Streak Watch: Junior designated hitter Matt Oberste has flirted with ending his journey into the record books since starting the TCU series Friday, but his hit streak continues. He shot a single to center in the top of the seventh to extend his hit streak to 27 games, which officially ties former OU player Marty Neff's OU record that was set in 1991. Oberste went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the victory. If he gets a hit against Kansas on Thursday, he will be in sole possession of the record ... again.
What it means: This victory completes the season sweep against Oral Roberts and extends OU's win streak to 11 games.
What’s next for the Sooners: OU returns home for a weekend series against Kansas starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The series is moved up a day because of Easter being Sunday. Junior pitcher Jonathan Gray (4-1, 1.41 ERA) is scheduled to start. He has thrown 18 innings and recorded 24 strikeouts in his last two outings.
