Men's golf: Sooners hope to continue success in upcoming tournament
Heather Brown, The Oklahoma Daily
Eduardo Castiello, college of arts and sciences junior, plays golf for OU and will be competing in the Las Vegas golf tournament the weekend of March 9.
The No. 26 Oklahoma Men’s Golf team will travel on Friday to Las Vegas to compete in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, where it will face its toughest test yet.
The team has rolled through its first two tournaments this spring with first and second place finishes and is looking to build on its hot start. This will be no small task though at a tournament that will field 11 of the top 13 teams in the country.
“It’s always been the best college tournament in the country,” said coach Ryan Hybl. “But this year it’s the best college tournament I may have ever seen in my career.”

In their last tournament, the Sooners showed they should not be overlooked, entering the final day tied with then-No. 5 Alabama for the lead before falling seven strokes back to finish second.
Continuing their recent success will not be easy, but junior Eduardo Castiello said the tough competition is a great opportunity for the Sooners.
“I feel like we have no pressure, we (don’t) have anything to lose, and we can win everything,” Castiello said. “We just have to go there, play some good golf and see what happens.”
It’s becoming clear that when this team is on top of its game, it can compete with anybody, on any level.
As big of an opportunity as it is for Oklahoma, it also has all the ingredients of a very long weekend.
The only team competing with a lower ranking than the Sooners will be No. 40 UNLV, but the tournament will be held on its home course.
“If we go out there and play like we’re capable of playing ... this could be a great opportunity for us,” Hybl said. “But if we don’t, we’ll go out there, and it won’t be that much fun of a week, either.”
Nobody knows better than the Sooners how big this weekend could be, but they aren’t shying away from the pressure.
“I’m sure all of my teammates know that we can beat anybody; it doesn’t matter if it’s number one, number two, whatever,” Castiello said. “We just have to do our thing, and we’re going to have good results.”
This weekend could propel OU forward, or it could be a momentum stopper, but the Sooners are prepared to go out and prove they belong.
