OU men's tennis team comes home with one win and one loss
The No. 5 OU men’s tennis team split matches over the weekend, winning against No. 22 Wake Forest and losing to No. 1 Virginia.
Friday, the Sooners played indoors due to bad weather, and defeated the Demon Deacons, 5-2. OU won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead.
“We played a great doubles point tonight,” coach John Roddick said. “It gave us quite a bit of momentum going into singles.”
In the singles part of the match, junior Guillermo Alcorta captured the second team point beating senior David Hopkins 6-1, 6-2.
“Willy played really well,” Roddick said. “It was his best indoor match that I’ve seen him play.”
After Wake Forest, the Sooners set its sights on the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers. However, Roddick’s squad came up short on Sunday, losing 6-1.
“Virginia played very well today and showed why they are ranked No. 1,” Roddick said. “We had chances in the doubles that we let get away.”
The only point won against Virginia came from Dane Webb. Webb defeated ITA No. 65 sophomore Mitchell Frank 7-6(6), 6-2. Frank ended the year at No. 2 last year and at one point, reached No. 1.
“Dane had a great win against the No. 1 player in the country from last year,” Roddick said. “I was really proud of the way he executed.”
The Sooners will play No. 42 Louisville at 5 p.m. Friday in Louisville, Ky.
