Softball: Top-ranked Sooners win four games at Campbell/Cartier Classic

The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team continued its undefeated season at the Campbell/Cartier Classic in San Diego this weekend.
The Sooners (10-0) relied on their two senior pitchers – Keilani Ricketts and Michelle Gascoigne – to shutout their first four opponents at the Classic.
On Friday, Gascoigne accumulated a career-high 16 strikeouts in an easy 7-0 victory against UC Riverside. For her encore performance, the senior blanked No. 16 Washington on Saturday despite getting just two runs of support.
Ricketts was effective as she picked up two wins over the weekend. The All-American led the Sooners to a 4-0 win over the host team San Diego State on Friday. The following afternoon, OU’s offense run-ruled No. 22 Kentucky, 11-0, to give Ricketts her fourth win of the season.
Sunday’s matchup versus Notre Dame was a come-from-behind effort for the Sooners. A leadoff double for sophomore Lauren Chamberlain tied the game in the seventh inning. Ultimately, OU defeated the Irish after hot hitting in the ninth to take the 7-5 win.
Senior catcher Jessica Shults made Sooner history over the weekend as she hit her 56th career home run – tying an Oklahoma record.
The Sooners will be back in action Thursday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., when they play Georgia.
