OU baseball: Sooners edge out Hofstra, 3-2, in game-one of Saturday's double-header

Jono Greco, The Oklahoma Daily 3:31 p.m. February 16, 2013

The No. 19 baseball team pulled out a 3-2 squeaker against Hofstra in game-one of a double-header Saturday following a solid outing by junior pitcher Jonathan Gray and relief performance by senior Jake Fisher.

Key Stat: Eight — The Sooners' (2-0) pitching staff threw eight scoreless innings against Hofstra (0-2). The Prides' two runs came on a two-run homer by left fielder Kenny Jackson in the seventh. Otherwise, no Hofstra player reached third base.

Key Player: Senior third baseman Garrett Carey — The two-year starter went 4-for-4 with an RBI while falling a home run short of the cycle. The four-hit day was the first of his career.

What it means: The Sooners have won their first two games in different fashions. They won the first game with a lot of runs, and they won their second game in a close, low-scoring affair. This team is proving it can win in multiple ways, and that’s a good thing to find out early in the season.

What’s next for the Sooners: OU returns to action at 4 p.m. today to try to go for the double-header sweep and series victory.
