Audition Rules (provided by the website):

Duration: No talk can exceed 9 minutes.

Speaker release: Everyone who appears onstage must sign the TEDx Speaker Release form.

Students have the opportunity to audition to give “the talk of their life” at OU’s independent TED event next semester.

TEDxOU is a part of the TEDx program, made up of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share the TED-like experience. TED, which stands for “Technology, Entertainment, and Design,” began in 1984 as a nonprofit devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading.”

Auditions will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, in room 3040 of Price Hall.

At TEDxOU, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

TEDxOU videos have drawn more than 55,000 views in less than a year.

TEDxOU Curator Adam Croom said the response last year was humbling and incredible, as there were well more than 600 applicants for the 300 tickets.

“It was overwhelming, and it was intellectually exhausting” he said. “But, it was, also, so inspiring.”

Croom said the many online views allowed for an impact beyond the 300 people in the room.

“It’s a global impact,” he said. “It’s spread across 120 countries.”

Croom said, on the day of, there will be a total of about 15 speakers, presenting anywhere between 3 and 18 minutes. Although some have already been selected, Croom said they are on the lookout for exceptionally good, high quality student speakers to apply online then audition in front of a handful of judges for the remaining spots.

“It’s the big event we look forward to every year,” he said. “It being so multidisciplinary really brings the university together.”

TEDxOU will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, in the Oklahoma Memorial Union’s Meacham Auditorium.
