Correction: A Daily reporter attended Pizza with the President Tuesday evening, not Wednesday evening as originally reported.
University officials — including President David Boren — continuously claim they believe in transparency and openness.
However, every time we attempt to access upper level administrators for comment on campus issues, we are confronted by institutional boundaries
On Tuesday, a Daily reporter seeking comments from Boren about a possible tution increase resorted to attending Pizza with the President in Walker Center.
It wouldn’t be necessary for reporters to interrupt designated student events if Boren followed Bob Stoops’ example and held a weekly press conference.
Stoops meets with the media every Tuesday during football season to answer questions.
A 30 minute session with reporters each week would allow Boren to demonstrate his dedication to transparency and enable the media to obtain the information needed to inform the public.
If we want Oklahoma to be known as an academic institution and not merely a football school, it’s important the President — a politician familiar with the media — be available.

Once a month might be better (or twice a month) and it would be free advertising (which would save the university money).

David Boren is a politician and politicians only tell you what you want to hear.

Let's see...where was the state of OU's academics in 1993 before Boren came to the University? President Boren has done more for this school than any president in OU's history including Cross. He is probably the most respected human being in the state of Oklahoma's history. He opinion is also highly sought after by business and political leaders throughout the nation even after he left public office 15 years ago.
If he wants to be private about University matters that are still in process and not ready for public announcement, I think he's earned that right. I trust him. Now, if you had just cause to think he was maliciously hiding something or keeping something from the public eye for personal gain, then be my guest and do your journalistic duty by finding the truth. However, since this isn't the case, lay off of our President and let him do his job! He is most likely actively reaching out to all of the state politicians trying to work a deal for more higher education funding. These processes take time and don't need the added aggravation that comes with dealing with Daily reporters who want to play investigative journalist.
On a side note, Pizza with the President was on Tuesday; do better fact checking. Also, don't you think it's kind of ironic that approached President Boren at a public forum to highlight how he doesn't hold public forums?
