Nancy Russell working at her Campus Corner bakery, Cookies and Cards, on June 12, 2011. The bakery is being closed on Aug. 1 because the landowner is increasing the rent.

Cookies-N-Cards owner Nancy Russell was told at the beginning of June she has until Aug. 1 to vacate her current location on Asp Street and now must hold a fundraiser to help finance her move to a new location.

“It was inevitable, we knew it was going to happen eventually but I’m not too happy about it,“ said Tobias Schiele, a longtime friend of Russell's who worked at Cookies and Cards after high school.

Russell opened her first store on Campus Corner right after her 21st birthday. The shop was a small gift shop above Town Tavern, where Starbucks is now.

“When times were tough, I learned to wait tables at the Town Tavern,” Russell said. “Then things got busy upstairs, I didn’t have time to be waiting at the Tavern, so I asked if there was anything else I could do. The owner asked me if I could bake deserts,” Russell said.

Russell took on the task of baking for the restaurant, and has been baking ever since.

To help finance Russell’s move to a new location, friends and fans of Cookies-N-Cards are hosting a Saturday fundraiser at the Hidden Castle that will include several bands and a bake sale, all for a $5 cover. More fundraisers are in the works as well, Russell said.

Russell is not thrilled about the future of her current property.

“They are probably going to tear this place out and rebuild it, just like Fuzzy’s and Pickleman’s and everyone else here on corporate corner,” Russell said.

Russell said she is looking for a new place to set up shop, though it will take her a while to move in. She has her eye on a place at 12th and Alameda streets, next to Dicky’s Barbecue Pit.

“I love the area. I fit there. I belong there. I just can’t afford it yet,” Russell.

Where's the rest of the story? Why is she being kicked out? Who's doing the kicking? And what is the plan for the space?

It appears as if the reporter interviewed one individual and decided that constituted a story.
