OU wrestling prevails over No. 17 Tigers
For the first time since the 2002-03 season, No. 9 OU (14-2-1, 2-1-1 Big 12) has won consecutive Big 12 matches after an easy 25-10 victory over No. 17 Missouri in Columbia on Saturday.
"This was the best team effort of the season," head coach Jack Spates said. "Even in our losses, we were competitive. I couldn't be prouder of our guys for closing out this week with another Big 12 victory."
Big 12 wins don't come easy, but this one seemingly did.
The only deficit OU saw was after a 3-1 decision by the Tiger's No. 7 ranked Mark Ellis over No. 12 redshirt junior Nathan Fernandez at HWT, giving Missouri the 3-0 lead.
But the Norman grapplers came back. Freshman Jarrod Patterson, ranked No.18 at 125 pounds, posted six takedowns in en route to a 14-5 major decision which gave OU its first lead, 4-3.
The trend continued as the next four matches were owned by OU. Freshman Kendric Maple (133 pounds) earned the technical fall over Nathan McCormick, 16-0.
Redshirt junior Zack Bailey (141 pounds) showed why he's ranked third in the nation with a 3-0 shutout decision over Todd Schavrien.
Redshirt senior Kyle Terry, also ranked third, got the 12-2 major decision at 149 pounds, and then Shane Vernon earned the 5-2 decision which gave OU the 19-3 lead.
Missouri would not be able to come back from this deficit, although Missouri's Nick Marable (165 pounds) and Max Askren (184 pounds) quickly earned quick wins over freshmen Tyler Caldwell and Erich Schmidtke, respectively.
OU redshirt junior Jeff James (174 pounds) and senior Eric Lapotsky (197 pounds) also earned decisions.
"This year has been all about restoring attitudes and our guys buying into what we are teaching them," Spates said. "We have a youthful group that has grown up fast. Our assistants have done a fabulous job and it is all coming together."
The third annual "Beauty and the Beast" event will be held this Friday at 7 p.m. against Chattanooga.
