College of Continuing Education to host water conservation conference

The University of Oklahoma College of Continuing Education will host the first International WaTER Conference and WaTER prize award ceremony this fall.

Water Technologies for Emerging Regions, WaTER, is a group of students and faculty who work and research to solve drinking water and sanitation problems in developing countries.

In October 2008, Stephen P. Luby, Ph.D., who has worked for the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Bangladesh was awarded the WaTER prize to celebrate the contributions he has made to clean water development. He will be given a cash prize of $25,000 in which half of that money will be given to a WaTER-related non-profit organization of his choice.

The conference, including guest speakers and sessions relevant to drinking water and sanitation will be Oct. 26-27, with a post-conference workshop Oct. 28 on the OU campus. It will bring together several groups responding to the UN Millennium Development Goals focusing on water and sanitation problems in developing areas and small villages.

Supreme Court Justice comes for centennial celebration

Andrew Coats, dean of the OU College of Law, announced Thursday Supreme Court Justices Anthony Kennedy and John Roberts will visit Norman this fall as part of the school’s centennial celebration.

About 150 students will be invited to dinner with Kennedy on Oct. 1 at the Embassy Suites and Roberts will visit Norman on Nov. 17, Coats told the Student Bar Association.

“It’s a big deal,” Coats said. “I don’t think we’ve ever had a Chief Justice [of the United States Supreme Court] come to Oklahoma.”

Stanley Evans, assistant dean of the college, informed students in attendance about a town-hall meeting scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sept. 25. He said the meeting will fulfill an OU requirement for each college to discuss tuition and fees.

State regents focus on financial assistance, smaller colleges

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education met Thursday to discuss the future of higher education in the state.

Though many of the issues mentioned were focused on smaller state colleges and universities, along with focusing on scholarships, grants and high school student performance, OU was mentioned on a few items on the agenda.

OU’s request to grant five honorary degrees during commencement ceremonies in the spring of 2010 was approved.

The Regents also approved of expanding the degree level given to students who study at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center by allowing students the ability to earn a Masters of Science in Biological Psychology and Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Psychology degrees.

In a report reviewed by the Regents, the Health Sciences Center also received about $1.7 million in revenue collected from taxes placed on cigarette and tobacco products during the 2009 fiscal year. Though tobacco taxes brought in a total of about $3.4 million, the funds collected are split between OU and Oklahoma State University’s Center for Health Sciences. OSU received the same amount as OU.
