LUBBOCK, Texas – This year’s game in Lubbock features a rare sight: a good Texas Tech defense and a traditionally powerful offense that has been struggling this season. However, both sides of the ball decided to show up today for the Red Raiders and they lead the Sooners at halftime 17-6.
Texas Tech quarterback Taylor Potts came out firing on all cylinders in the Red Raider’s first drive, completing 6 of 8 for 49 yards. Potts and the Red Raider offense picked apart the OU defense and put up a 33-yard field goal on their first drive. However, the Tech offense slowed down a bit with their next two drives ending with a three-and-out and an interception by OU cornerback Jonathan Nelson.
The Raider offense would catch fire though with a 65-yard completion to freshman wide receiver Alex Torres. The long completion brought the Raiders down to the four yard line and they would eventually punch in the first touchdown of the game. Later, Potts would fire a 21-yard strike to freshman receiver Austin Zouzalik for another touchdown, putting Tech up 17 to six over the Sooners.
Landry Jones and the OU offense would have no answer for the raging Red Raiders. Jones completed nine of 18 for 93 yards in the first half and was sacked twice. After a field goal early in the second quarter, Jones and the Sooner offense would face three consecutive three-and-out drives before getting the ball with 12 seconds left in the half and taking a knee. The running game has been slow as well, with running backs Chris Brown and Demarco Murray combining for a meager 38 yards.
However the Sooners’ kicking woes might have found a solution with walk-on kicker Patrick O’Hara. O’Hara hit a 47-yard field goal on OU’s second drive which is a career long for him and a season best for OU’s offense. O’Hara would later kick a 23-yard field goal through at the beginning of the second quarter and is responsible for all of OU’s points in the first half.
Injuries continue to be an ongoing trend for the football team as freshman lineman Ben Habern was taken out of the game with an apparent ankle injury. Habern was assisted off the field and did not appear to be able to put any weight on his ankle. His absence was well noticed as quarterback Jones was continually pressured and sacked twice. An update on Habern’s injury will be available in the post game wrap up.
