Friday Face-off: Oregon's football team has the ugliest uniform design in college football
Click here to read the other side to the Friday Face-off and why James Corley thinks that Boise State has the ugliest uniforms
The ugliest uniforms in all of college football have to be that of the Oregon Ducks.
To break it down, black and green, and even yellow, are not bad colors. They have been used together for years by other teams.
Black or white is an essential part of any team’s color scheme, and you would think this basic idea would be hard to mess up. Yellow is a bright and pleasing color, there should be nothing dreary about that.
Well congratulations Ducks, you have managed to turn three of the most basic colors into a combination of ugly and fugly.
The first problem with this ill-dress is the ridiculous patterns on the shoulders of every player. I am not exactly sure what is trying to be accomplished here, but whatever it is, the design fails miserably.
The Ducks used to cover this area with a design that looked a lot like tread marks. Is your intention to look like you lost a battle with an automobile before the game with those skid marks?
Well, Oregon came to their senses and dropped the horrific design, but just as quickly lost their design sense again when they added wings to the shoulders. Yes, I am serious, wings.
My best guess is someone was either drinking Red Bull at the time or seriously thought a literal interpretation of a duck was appropriate. Are they trying to insinuate the football team can fly, well if so, sign me up.
Even so, these wings cover the shoulder pads on each side, and look like they extend from the neck area. Wings coming out of your neck is a rather odd concept if you ask me. Ask any eight year old who dressed up as Tinkerbell for Halloween and she can tell you where the wings go.
I am all for jazzing up a uniform, so while you’re at it maybe you can tie a few bows on the edges as well, because that would make more sense than that ridiculous design.
What is wrong with leaving the shoulders bare? I think there is little that could help this uniform after they already use the most unflattering yellow and forest green, but at this point it might be worth a shot.
The new uniforms have even moved beyond these colors and the wings to include colors like silver for their numbers on the jersey. How do silver, black, and yellow match? Sounds like the colors for a completely different team. Sorry Ducks, but just adding another color in for funnies is not going to solve your uniform issue.
Maybe one day Oregon will come to its senses and just roll with plain and simple green and black. No frills or fuss necessary… back to basics is not a bad thing.

Hilarious. Your season really has gone downhill when you have to start whining about Oregon's uniforms.
Go DUX!!!!
I think they are called the Ducks, Right? Do me a favor and click on the following link and tell me what colors you see:-) Nice piece though. Well crafted and very thoughtfull. No...Really...I mean it!

The uniforms are cutting edge for material and design by Nike. The high school players from around the country love 'em. The parents hate 'em. Kids love things their parents dislike (music for instance). The U of O has the #1 Sports Marketing School in the country. They seem to know what they are doing. What's great about having the Nike owner as a alumni is that most schools in the country have Nike logo gear. For every dollar spent on logo gear at the college book or sporting goods store the profits go back to Nike and eventually some of those dollars to the UO through donations by Phil Knight. He has given over $300 million to the U of O. Thanks Oklahoma!!!
It always seems the people that say Oregon's uniforms are older people because when ever I read recruiting articles pertaining to Oregon the recruits love the uniforms and the different combinations. I'm in my 40's and I love Oregon's different combinations of uniforms but I also love the traditional uniforms of Oklahoma.
Simple comment for simple people.
You are a bandwagon idiot! This is really gotten old. And you with a halloween team right in your city.
The program is a product of where we live, innovative , interesting, and different. Obviuosly not the same as Oklahoma. Do you guys really need to worry about someone elses uniforms? Maybe you do, because many recruits mention the fact they like the constant changes.
And the state of Oklahoma has the ugliest girls on the planet. My statement has about as much credibility as your article.
The players themselves, had a lot of input as to the design and color schemes used in this years uniforms. Just because the rest of college football doesn't think modern or cater to their players (seriously, Nebraska?) doesn't open the door to poke fun.
Or is it because you already have three losses and have nothing better to write about while you wait for basketball season to start?
Bitter much?
Sounds like there are some Sooners fans who are so bitter about the 3 loss season that they'll talk sh!t even about another team's uniforms. Don't be jealous that Nike loves Oregon more than you and gives them new unis every 3 years. By the way, the wings are also designed to look like brass knuckles, because the ducks beat up on tams like the Cowboys and Sooners. GO DUCKS!
The players seem to think they are cool. Your opinion is outdated and uninformed. I think you're envious of the team that bashed you in the Holiday Bowl last year and is now ascending heights OSU can only dream about. Become a Duck or stifle your envy.
Wait... what are the Sooners ranked?
1. Florida
2. Texas
3. Alabama
4. Iowa
5. Cincinnati
6. TCU
7. Boise State
8. Oregon
9. LSU
10. Georgia Tech
I don't see them in the top 10... huh...
Hey, how you doin'?
Nice page here on the internet. Pretty red and white with gray trim. A sun up in the sorta right-hand corner. Nice bunch of lines coming down the left-hand side, originating someplace (I can't see where, perhaps from another distant sun that I can't see) and going to the right-hand side but they don't match up very well. Perhaps that works for you, OK. If you like it, why should I be critical?
Now, I've got a question. Are you still upset with us for that bad call at Autzen? The football team didn't do that. The team tho' did design the uniforms and we are willing to stand behind our team and their uniforms. We like them and if they get under the skin of our opponents, well, we can live with that.
We might think your cowboy hats and covered wagon are somewhat dated but that says some things about your program and you have a right to be justifiably proud of your history and tradition. So do we.
We are a Pacific Rim state and we have athletes from the South Pacific. Those feathers also symbolize warrior sword necklaces (take a close look.) If you wish to be offensive to cultures other than your own, that is, of course, your prerogative. Another idea might be better suited for you and your football team.
Your team may, when injuries heal, be on course to meet us again on the field of play. We would welcome that. Neutral field. Playing for the 'marbles.' Pacific Islanders have been known to be a bit touchy toward people who make fun of their heritage. The better idea is to apologize for being derogatory and gouging at the beliefs of others. Your editors should be ashamed for letting this kind of denigration appear in print. Your journalistic integrity is being called into question.
GO DUCKS!
If you've followed any of the history on this, other than just repeating other comments, you would know that as a marketing piece, the uniforms are huge. Designed by the players, coolness factor, big recruiting advantage, and they make news. Track recruit's comments and they're all positive on this, even some we've signed. So you don't have to like them. But how about an original point of view.
First, Oregon players love them
Second, Oregon recruits love them
Third, Oregon fans love them
Fourth, Oregon's top donor makes them
Fifth, Who cares what anybody not on the above list thinks!
I used to think that OU students, fans and team all had a remarkable sense of class. It's too bad the Bob Stoops era has changed all that.
The Sooners don't lose with class, now - they just lose. The article above is a pretty good example of that - since you don't have a very good football team, you might as well comment on the uniforms of another team doing remarkably well. You are Duck Green with envy that Oregon plays a more exciting brand of football than the Sooner's do. Your QB has hustled off the NFL, so you are left with little to look forward to.
Focus on your own problems, you have plenty. Think about that lousy team in a lousy bowl this Holiday season. It's either that or regain some of that "class" you've lost recently.
Go Ducks!
Annelise,
Grab a clue and do some research before you speak.
1st, many of the players helped NIKE select and design the uniforms. Players like them, maybe that is why Oregon is ranked #8 and OU is well....lOUsy.
2nd, the "skid marks" on the shoulders were actually diamond plate design. It represents toughness as it is often made from steel...look it up hun. If Sam Bradford wore them, maybe his shoulder wouldn't need surgery.
3rd, both the wings and "skid marks" are to keep the uniforms from stretching/ripping. Thanks to NIKE's technology, the Oregon uniforms are 50% lighter than other uniforms and need reinforced shoulders....once again look it up.
4th, I can't believe I went throught the registration process on here just to give you a piece of my mind. Forgive me, but I could not stand your naivety.
Have a nice day.
Add to last comment...taught Journalism at OkSt for six years. I hope I didn't have you in a class.
Okay, just by looking at my screen name I think you can probably see which side I stand on. I'm not going to defend Oregon's uniforms or how the recruits really like them or that they are cutting edge technology, 30% lighter than last years uniforms or that designs on the shoulder pads are there for a purpose other than aesthetics -- by now I'm sure you are picking up on my sarcasm but I digress.
You that right about white and black being a part of almost every school's colors. Not much I can do to defend the gray Oregon has incorporated other than that it too is kind of a neutral color.
The diamond plate that you call tread marks (like a jeep has) and the the wings on the shoulder pads are there because that is where the uniforms take the biggest hits; the most wear and tear. Oregon has a lot of money --okay, Nike has a lot of money but they can't afford to replace them after every game.
I and many others love the uniforms and we think they rest of you are all just a bit jealous of Oregon. I'm not sure why it would be coming from you Sooner fans? OU is UOs daddy. The only way Oregon could only beat Oklahoma was by paying off those refs.
Sorry to hear you don't like the Ducks' uniforms. Don't worry, they're like buses. If you don't "get" one, there will be a different one coming along soon. Interestingly, the uniforms are a major recruiting advantage. Many players from all over the USA are coming to Oregon now and one thing they say they like is the uniform. Maybe your favorite team could try to be a bit more innovative...but really, we'd rather you didn't.
Annelise Russell, let me be the first Duck fan to thank you for being one in a long line to critique our uniforms. We love it!!!!! While I'm not personally a big fan of the wings either, the design has done exactly what it was supposed too do. Draw attention to one of the best football programs in America. While we may not have the long tradition of the Oklahoma program were headed that way in a hurry and you might be surprised at the attention paid to those fugly old Uniforms by some young high school recruits around the country. You might want to spend a little more time trying to figure out what to do with your current quarterback issues rather than giving us all this free publicity. LOL. But again thank you!!!!
GOOOOO !!!!! DUCKS !!!!!!!
sorry oklahoma, we're not a "back to basics" type of program... keep rollin' in that wagon of yours and beating teams like idaho st., tulsa, baylor, and the kansas's... you know what's funny is the fact that an article like this would even be written in the first place. i for one am a die hard duck fan, but i respect the program and tradition that OU has. what i'm trying to say is that it's kind of nice knowing that one of the top 5 football programs in the nation is taking time out of their day to comment on what we're wearing.
good luck on the rest of your season, and stay classy oklahoma.
What do you think of our offense?
Okay. Now let's critique the Sooners' uniforms:
Yaaaaaaaaaaaawn.
Enjoy the Holiday Bowl.
Hey, maybe you haven't heard, the Titanic hit an iceburg and sank. It's quite a trajedy, you should look into it.
I think that some people have obviously missed the point of this article. It is written as a comical review of one team's uniforms, not a bash on the Oregon team or their program. I find it amusing that the Oregon fans complain about a lack of class from OU fans pertaining to this article, yet they are the ones who decided to register on the OU student newspaper website and make snide comments about the holiday bowl and OU's 5-3 record.
There is nothing wrong with being modern and edgy and doing it a different way. There is also nothing wrong with being traditional and doing it the same way for many years.
So in short, Oregon fans-grow up, stop bashing a student's attempt at writing a humorous article for a student newspaper and enjoy being the number 1 team in the Pac-10.
This is HILARIOUS. Ducks fans have no life, they find it necessary to get on another college's website and reply to an article. Really, do you guys just sit on Google and search your university for negative things?
I digress. They can't spell very well. The go to a second rate university. They probably have a meth addiction like the majority of their state. And they are so RETARDED, they think their jerseys are cool.
Cute guys.
Who cares about you Pacific Islanders and your silly culture anyway? You have to have a gimmick to get press. It just happens to be a decent year for you in football, so that helps you get on ESPN a little bit.
Oh, and OU =/= OSU. Some of you dumb ducks can't get that straight. Especially the guy who claimed to teach JMC at OkSt. Sorry. You really have it rough, being from one idiot school is bad enough...
Keep up the fight ducks!
SUCCESSFUL TROLL IS SUCCESSFUL
HAHAHAHAHA
YOU DUCKS LOST TO STANFORD? THE STANFORD?
Wow. Way to go! I will be commenting on your website shortly.
Again. Thanks for a great ROFL opportunity.
wow. you guys in OK have no style. oregon's uniforms are the coolest, hippest badest uniforms ever. and i am an ulum of ucla!
