Incumbent falls to Greg Mashburn in primary after 12 years in office

Kuykendall loses district attorney primary

12:00 a.m. July 24, 2006

Primary voters ousted District Attorney Tim D. Kuykendall on Tuesday, unseating the 12-year incumbent and choosing challenger Greg Mashburn.

Mashburn, a Norman resident and Oklahoma County assistant district attorney, challenged Kuykendall's record prosecuting crime in Cleveland, McClain, and Garvin counties. He was rewarded with nearly 65 percent of the vote in Cleveland County, garnering 8,937 votes to Kuykendall's 4,856.

Showings for Kuykendall in the other counties failed to offset the overwhelming Cleveland County loss, with Mashburn receiving 10,477 votes to Kuykendall's 6,090.

Since no Democrat filed, Mashburrn automatically becomes the new District Attorney.

Both attorneys are OU Law School graduates.

The race was one of several decided in Tuesday's primary elections.

Republicans across the state picked U.S. Rep. Ernest Istook to lead the ticket as their party's nominee for governor. He beat Tulsa businessman Bob Sullivan and two other challengers with better than 55 percent of the vote. Istook will run against incumbent Gov. Brad Henry, who handily won the Democratic primary with better than 85 percent.

Republican state Rep. Todd Hiett and state Sen. Scott Pruitt will face each other in an Aug. 22 run-off for the chance to run against either Rep. Jari Askins or former congressional aide Pete Regan, each of whom failed to win a clear majority in the Democratic primary. on the November ballot. The two Democrats both outpolled the hometown favorite, Sen. Cal Hobson of Norman, who obtained 45 percent of the vote in Cleveland County but only got 18 percent statewide.

In the only other statewide contest, former Secretary of State Howard G. Barnett Jr. beat finance executive Dan Keating, 60 percent to 40 percent.

Tim Emrich and John Sparks will face each other in the only local run-off race. The two Democrats finished in a virtual tie, with about 35 percent each, defeating fellow political newcomer Derrick Ott, who got about 30 percent. In Cleveland County, Emerich had 2,432 votes, with 2,331 for Sparks and 2,003 for Ott.

Republican Ron Davis won a clear majority for his party's nomination for the same office, with 1,738 votes to Wayne Maxwell's 1,601.

Lt. Gov. Mary Fallin and Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett will face off in an Aug. 22 run-off for the congressional seat Istook is vacating. Fallon got 35 percent to Cornett's 24 percent, while Corporation Commissioner Denise Bode led four other candidates for runner-up status with 19 percent.

The winner of that contest will face physician David Hunter, who won the Democratic primary.

The Fifth Congressional District doesn't include Cleveland County, however, where incumbent U.S. Rep. Tom Cole will face former U.S. Foreign Service officer Hall Spake for the Fourth Congressional District seat.

Cleveland County Election Board Secretary Paula G. Roberts described turnout as moderate, with 27,155 voters going to the polls. While the county has more registered Republicans than Democrats, turnout numbers were roughly equal with 13,997 voters casting Republican ballots and 13,148 casting ballots in the Democratic primary.
